Sound therapy for adults with learning difficulties

Here’s a copy of a recent email, I received from someone who has recently participated in one of our 4-day sound therapy workshops:

Hi Tony

Thanks again for the amazing workshop.

I am still feeling the wonderful effects of the vibrations. I’m loving my instruments, which I ‘ve been playing daily. I have also started saying the Tara mantra 108 times nearly every day. I dreamt about Tara and came out of a sleep saying the Mantra.

I wanted to share something wonderful with you. I work with adults with learning disabilities, one of my clients who is non verbal and also has challenging needs, self harming or harming staff on the odd occasion, although I have to say he has never hit out at me.

I brought my instruments into work on Thursday, I do sleep overs with this client. I left the instruments on the table. He came into the room and picked up the drum and started to play. He got a beautiful rhythm going. he had a big smile on his face, it was a wonderful moment. He picked it up throughout the evening for a couple of minutes at a time.

I came in yesterday morning to do another sleepover with the same client. He was very agitated, he started slapping himself loudly and crying. He went and hid under the stairs. I went and got my drum and sat outside on the floor playing my drum. He immediately stopped hitting and crying. I stayed outside and played for half an hour. He got out of his dark room nicely calm and had a smile on his face. He was great for the rest of the day. If that had happened before it could have went on for hours.

I feel he has a strong connection with the sounds of the drum. He likes them played with loud tones. This is a major positive development with this client. The first thing he did this morning was to come over and play the drum, with a smile on his face.

Thank you for sharing the positive vibrations as I feel I’m passing them on, giving people their voice back through sound.

The “WOW” factor of life

The last 4-day workshop we held in Glastonbury from 27 – 30 September was one of the best ever!

On the first day, we worked with Tibetan singing bowls and our voices to tone and chant.

On Day 2 we worked with crystal singing bowls and had a group sound healing with gongs and drums

We had a calm 3rd day working with a variety of tuning forks

At the end of the third day, Rob Ellam Whitefeather gave a wonderful relaxing sound bath.

On the last day we worked with grounding and rhythm tools and created a group healing drum circle which was very powerful

The small island of Iz can easily be reached by a 50-minute trip on a catamaran from the port at Zadar on the Dalmatian coastline, renowned for its crystal clear, warm water

The venue is Hotel Korinjak, located at the entrance of the small harbour of Veli Iž on a colourful point in the mists of a pine tree forest and surrounded by beaches. The island of Iž is an ideal holiday spot for anyone searching for peace and quiet.

The hotel has 80 rooms with en-suite bathrooms. Most have a balcony and a view of the sea or the pine tree park. The restaurant serves vegetarian food on a wide covered terrace above the hotel beach.

Getting there…..!!

This Sun, Sea and Sounds Retreat is happening on the small Island of Iz in the Adriatic Sea in the middle of Croatia.

The nearest airport is at Zadar. You can fly there directly from London Stanstead, Manchester and Dublin, plus other cities in Europe.

Alternatively you can fly to Split, Rijeka or Zagreb and get the bus to Zadar from there.

From Zadar you can take a 50 minute trip on a catamaran to Veli Iz which is the main town on the island of Iz. Hotel Korinjak, the venue for the retreat, is located on the edge of Veli Iz, and is in walking distance from the small harbour.

Transport and accommodation is relatively cheap in Croatia., so you could combine the Retreat with an extended holiday in this beautiful country visiting other islands or interesting old cities like Dubrovnik…..

Outline Program:

There will be mixture of talks and practical demonstrations about sound therapy and you will also have time to practice playing the instruments and giving sound therapy both one-to-one and in small groups.

We will hold the workshops both indoors and outdoors. At least one session will take place on a tiny uninhabited islet reached by motor boat from outside the hotel. Here we will practice Yoga Nidra and Shamanic drumming..!!

Each day we will focus on one type of sound therapy instrument, and on the last day we will teach you how to pull it all together so you can give sound therapy to your friends, family and clients (if you are an existing therapist).

There will be a 2 hour introductory session with a Sound Bath and Guided Mediation on the evening of Saturday 30th August.

On each of the next 6 days we will work with sound therapy instruments and our voices. The workshops will take place from 10.00 – 12.00 and 15.00 – 17.00 every day. This will give you plenty of free to relax and do other activities, like swimming, snorkeling, walking and cycling.

Sunday: Singing Bowl Therapy

Monday: Gong Therapy

Tuesday: Tuning Fork Therapy

Wednesday: Voice Therapy

Thursday: Drum Therapy

Friday: Pulling it all together so you can practice complete sound therapy sessions

Saturday: Depart

The teaching will be given by Tony Nec, the Principal of the Colour of Sound Institute and will be in English with some translation into Croatian.

Tony will be assisted by Ivana Novacic who is a professor of music theory and a professional singer in Croatia. She is an advanced student of the Colour of Sound Institute.

By the end of the workshop you will feel confident to give sound therapy to your family and friends or to integrate it into an existing holistic practice, such as massage.

Workshop fees: €150 for 26 hours over 7 days

Accommodation, including bed, breakfast, evening meal, morning yoga and evening circle dances: from €300.

Each day will start with some gentle movement and a beautiful sound meditation to relax your nervous system and calm your mind….we’ll then give a short talk and series of demonstration about how to work with the sound therapy instrument of the day, and you’ll have plenty of time to practice the techniques on your own, 1-2-1 and in small groups.

The Location

The Deer Park Hotel and Spa, is located in the grounds of Howth Castle on the peninsula of Howth at the north of Dublin bay, 9 miles from the city centre, and 20 minutes from Dublin airport. The hotel enjoys breathtaking views of Ireland’s Eye and Dublin Bay.

Access from Dublin City Centre is easy, via the DART, Dublin’s frequent rapid rail system. If you stay at the Hotel, you’ll have plenty of free time in the evenings to connect with other workshop participants and explore the stunning peninsula. A pleasant stroll will take you into the fishing village of Howth where you can enjoy some lovely walks and stop off at one of the many pubs or restaurants.

The workshop tutor is Tony Nec, the Principal of the Colour of Sound Institute. Tony has over 20 years experience as a therapist, coach and trainer in complementary medicine, and has studied with many renowned masters of sound. He experienced the transcendental power of chanting from Catholic and Buddhist monks while a teenager. He sings in choirs and is a keen voicescape leader.

In a series of 2-hour workshops we’ll explore working with singing bowls, gongs, tuning forks, drums, our voices and guided meditation to:

On each workshop we’ll begin with a relaxing sound bath, followed by a guided meditation with sacred sounds.

We’ll give you a practical demonstration about how to play a sound healing instrument or use our voices for healing. Each 2 hour workshop will focus on one instrument.

You’ll then practice using these instruments and techniques for yourself and with others.

The workshops all take place on Saturday mornings:
