Creating simple tones with your voice is one of the easiest and most effective forms of sound healing.
Chanting short bija mantras is a form of vocal toning. It’s a great way to help yourself and others with healing sounds.
It’s a form of sound meditation or sound yoga, and it can be used in sound therapy sessions with individual clients and with groups.
In the video below, Roise O’Caoillidhe, an Associate Teacher with the Colour of Sound Institute, demonstrates a bija mantra practice.
This video was recorded at a workshop in Glastonbury, UK run by the Colour of Sound Institute.
CHAKRAS AND BIJA MANTRAS
We all have 7 main chakras and it is possible to open, balance and awaken each chakra using your voice.
A bija (sometimes spelt beeja) mantra is a one syllable Sanskrit word-sound.
Each chakra has a bija mantra sound associated with it. The sound vibrations harmonize the chakras creating vibrant health and wellness.
In this video the teacher, leads the mantra chant starting at the root or base chakra, then going up to the crown chakra and back down to the root.
This is a short vocal toning practice that is very beneficial when you do it frequently….some people do it every day!
The word bija means seed; mantra means mystical sound.
Each of the chakras has its own seed sound, it’s own bija mantra.
Chanting the bija mantras as part of a daily discipline or as part of a therapy session allows the chakras to be maintained in a balanced and harmonious energy pattern, ensuring optimum health and wellness.
If one or two chakras are out of balance, you can work specifically with their associated bija mantras. This can help to clear blocked or stuck energy and allow for the abundant, natural, life-force energy to flow more freely, thereby bringing balance and harmony.
Alternatively, you can chant all the bija mantras in turn to create greater health and wellness.
The table below details the beeja mantras for each of the chakras, along with their corresponding Sanskrit name, note / tone and colour.
Chakra | Sanskrit name | Note / tone | Beeja Mantra | Colour |
Root/Base | Mooladhara | C | LAM | Red |
Sacral | Swadhisthana | D | VAM | Orange |
Solar plexus | Manipura | E | RAM | Yellow |
Heart | Anahata | F | YAM | Green |
Throat | Vishuddhi | G | HAM | Blue |
Brow | Ajna | A | OM | Indigo |
Crown | Sahasrara | B | OM (silent) | Violet |
THE HEALING POWER OF VOCAL TONING
Using your voice to tone the chakras is an extremely powerful way to create balance and healing as well as super-charge the energy system.
You can work in this way both for yourself and for your clients.
As a daily practice, vocal toning is one of the most simple, easy and effective therapeutic tools you can use.
It’s free, and fully mobile, so you can do it anywhere, anytime!
Here's A Technique or Exercise That You Can Practice:

Then take a deep breath and out loud, chant or say the mantra or vowel sound on any note three times for 5 – 10 seconds each

- Let your attention move to the brow (third eye) chakra and chant or say OM (pronounced AUM).
- Let your attention jump to the crown chakra and silently chant or say the bija mantra OM (AUM) again.
Take some deep breaths in silence ….
Then descend through the chakras repeating the above process, :
